Itinerary Description

Day 1: Transfer to the Domestic Airport

  • Pick up in Dar es Salaam and transfer to the domestic airport, where you will catch a light plane to the Selous Game Reserve, the largest conservation area in Tanzania and the world (with the exception of the polarregions)
  • You will be met and transferred to Rufiji River Camp
  • This comfortable camp is located on a bend on the river
  • Crocodile and large pods of hippo may be seen from the bar
  • You can go on an afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River
  • In the evening return to the camp for dinner and overnight stay

Day 2: Full day exploring the Selous Game Reserve

  • Have an early morning breakfast and leave for a full day game drive in Selous
  • You can choose your ideal safari from a range of game viewing activities, including boat safaris, game drives and walking safaris (accompanied by an armed ranger for your protection)
  • You will then return to Rufiji River Camp in time for sunset drinks and another fantastic meal
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at your booked accommodation in Selous Game Reserve

Days 3-4: A day of game viewing, walking safari and game drive

  • A day of game viewing activities including a boat or walking safari and game drive, plus time to relax by the swimming pool at Rufiji River Camp
  • Continue with the tour until evening
  • Drive in the evening for dinner and overnight stay at your booked accommodation

Day 5: Transfer to Mikumi National Park

  • Transfer by light aircraft to Dar es Salaam where you will be met by a safari vehicle and transferred to Mikumi National Park, enjoying with a packed lunch en-route
  • You will arrive in Mikumi in time to settle in at Kikoboga Safari Lodge (also known as Mikumi Wildlife Lodge)
  • Enjoy the views over the floodplain and go for a sunset game drive
  • Mikumi is one of Tanzania’s larger parks and has excellent bird life as well as being good for viewing predators
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at your booked lodge in Mikumi

Day 6: An extensive morning game drive

  • An extensive morning game drive takes you out to Mwanambogo Dam, where many animals come for water
  • Have a late lunch back at Kikoboga Safari Lodge, then an evening game drive
  • Drive for dinner and overnight stay at your booked accommodation

Day 7: Transfer to the Udzungwa Mountains

  • Transfer to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, then hike to Sanje Waterfalls where you can swim in idyllic plunge-pools and camp at the top of a stunning 180m waterfall
  • The hike is short (2hrs) but quite steep in places
  • The afternoon is free for you to visit the site of the endemic African Violets and explore the forests and waterfalls
  • Overnight stay and dinner at camping in large and comfortable dome tents next to the falls

Day 8: Natural Viewing Platform of rock

  • Wake up to watch the sunrise over the Kilombero Valley, an amazing sight from the natural viewing platform of rock above the waterfalls
  • After breakfast, transfer to Kisolanza Farm in the Southern Highlands, arriving in time for lunch
  • There will be an afternoon excursion to visit Isimila Stone Age Site and Sandstone Pillars
  • Dinner will be served at the Old Farm House

Day 9: The Walking Trails Around the farm

  • The walking trails around the farm provide a fantastic opportunity for birdwatching, with an impressive checklist of 250 bird species recorded in the area
  • The area can also be explored on horseback
  • An optional day excursion to visit a Forestry Conservation Project can be arranged
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at your booked accommodation

Day 10: Transfer to Ruaha National Park

  • Transfer to Ruaha National Park where you will stay at the beautiful Mwagusi Safari Camp, situated on the banks of the Sand River
  • After lunch and a relaxing afternoon there will be a sunset game drive
  • Continue with the game drive until evening
  • In the evening drive to the camp for dinner and overnight stay

Day 11: Full day game viewing activities in Ruaha

  • Full day game viewing activities, including a foot safari and game drive
  • Have a game drive until afternoon
  • In the afternoon break for a while to have lunch
  • After lunch continue with an afternoon game drive until evening
  • Dinners are always memorable affairs, served under the stars often on the sand river itself!
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at your booked hotel in Ruaha

Day 12: Mwagusi Safari Camp

  • Mwagusi Safari Camp itself is immensely comfortable, yet with a real bush feel
  • If you can pull yourself away then there is another whole day to explore the remote and dramatic Ruaha National Park
  • Have a game drive until evening
  • In the evening drive to your booked accommodations for dinner and overnight stay

Day 13: Transfer by light aircraft to Dar es Salaam

  • Have an early breakfast at your hotel and transfer from Ruaha by light aircraft to Dar es Salaam
  • Arrive in Dar es Salaam for a good time for lunch
  • Leave you to rest for a while in the afternoon
  • In the late afternoon you may have an optional Dar es Salaam City tour if you wish too

Other Safari Important Notes

  1. ELECTRICITY
    All lodges and camps will have electricity although many work off generators with limited times.

The power supply in Tanzania is nominally 240VAC, 50hz. Variable voltage, spikes and sporadic, unexpected, unscheduled power cuts of varying duration can be expected.

  1. INTERNAL FLIGHTS/BAGGAGE
    Please note each passenger is only allowed a total of 15kgs of checked and carry-on luggage combined, and must be in small soft-sided bags. This is strictly enforced by airlines and outside of our control. extra luggage can be left in storage in Arusha (by arrangement prior to travel
  2. YELLOW FEVER
    It may be required to show a Yellow Fever certificate upon entering the country visited. Please check in with your local health expert for advice on Yellow Fever and other inoculations required for this area.
  3. ACCOMMODATION
    Please note all accommodation listed below is not guaranteed, but is indicative of the types of accommodation used.
  4. COMBO TRIP
    Please note that this tour combines with other New Sunset Budget Safari and Travel. As such, the staff and some travel companions on your tour may have previously been traveling together with New Sunset Budget Safari and Travel, prior to Day 1 of your tour. Likewise, some staff and travel companions may be continuing together on another New Sunset Budget Safari and Travel after your trip concludes.
